Sweet Treats: Paris Baguette

Today I went to one of my favorite pastry shops! Paris Baguette! Paris Baguette is actually a Korean style pastry shop. I don't mean that they sell Korean sweets, but more like they're a Korean company that sells French pastries. I think it's such a cute shop and the food there is amazing! Today I got some baby choux, feuilletee chocolate, and a strawberry pastry (I couldn't find the name of it... >.<).

Baby Choux
It's really light and creamy. It's not too milky and the cream and the choux matches really well. Also, it has a really good texture with each other. :D
Strawberry Pastry
I love the bread and the whipped cream together. Inside the bread, there's a strip of what I think is either cream cheese or cheese. 95% sure is cream cheese. :D
Feuilletee Chocolate
I think this has to be my favorite. It tastes like a crunchy croissant with semi-sweet chocolate chips embedded in the crevices. Oh, my gosh. I would love to have this every morning, but I already ate it all...  Oh well! XD

Here are some pictures of the cakes that they have.

There's so much more pastries that look and taste great. If you want to go their website, go to http://www.parisbaguetteusa.com/

Depression

So today, I invited my friend over to make something. Since tomorrow is my other friend's birthday, we decided to make a cake for him. I wanted to make something new without a recipe, so we said let's make a white chocolate roll cake with peach frosting. It sounded really good and we made the cake really well. Then, things started to turn. I flipped the cake too slowly onto the towel and the cake folded on itself. I started panicking and my friend just said to calm down and unfold it. We unfolded the cake, but I had forgotten to flour the towel with powdered sugar so it stuck to the towel. We somehow got it off and was able to roll it into a roll cake. It still tasted good but I'm kind of a perfectionist so I was really depressed. This is how it turned out when we tried to make it a bit more presentable.

As you can see, it didn't really hide the fact that there was a mistake. But it still tasted good so we told our friend "We'll make you something tomorrow on your birthday!" We told him that we made bread pudding today... We cut the roll cakes and put them in a container and just ate it like that. It was still pretty good so when I make it next time, I'll put up the recipe and a better presentation of the cake!

Peppermint Patties I

Today, I was really tired at school and I kept dozing off even though I have tests next week. I decided that I should either stretch or eat something. I liked the eating choice so when I came home I started to make my peppermint patties for school tomorrow. These are really refreshing and really easy to make! I have two versions, one with only two ingredients and this one. I'll make my other one next time, but anyways, enjoy! (My lighting was really bad today because our lights are dimming, but I promise my next post's pictures will be better!)

Ingredients:

  • 2 1/4 cups powdered sugar
  • 3 tablespoons of heavy cream
  • 2 1/2 teaspoons of peppermint extract
  • 1/4 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of butter or shortening
  • 8 ounces of semi-sweet chocolate, chopped

Directions:

  • In a large bowl, pour in your sifted powdered sugar, cream. and both of your extracts.

  • If you're using your stand mixer, use the paddle attachment, and if your using a hand mixer, just be  careful of the powdered sugar. Make sure you have a really large bowl. If you don't have a stand mixer or a hand mixer, you can do this by hand with a whisk.
  • Mix your ingredients until it is well combined and smooth. It should feel like a dry paste. Dry enough to handle, but not so dry it feels like clay. If your mixture is a little dry, they'll crack on the edges. If that happens, just add 1/2 tablespoon of cream.

  • Make 30 balls of dough out of your 1/2 tablespoon on your parchment paper. Flour the bottom of your measuring cup with powdered sugar and press each ball until they are around an inch and a half in diameter. Chill them in the freezer for at least 30-45 minutes.

  • In a clean bowl, add your chopped chocolates and butter. In a pot, fill it 1/4 way with water. Turn on the fire to low-medium and let it simmer a little.

  • Put your bowl on top of the simmering pot and melt your chocolate and butter. It should look really glossy and smooth.

  • Get our your circles from the fridge and immediately start to coat them with chocolate. Use two forks to do this. First, dip one patty in the chocolate, use one fork to quickly turn it over, then scoop it up and scrape the excess chocolate on the bowl. Put your fork down onto the parchment paper and use the other fork to   push it out of the fork.

  • Chill it in the fridge for 30-40 minutes. Enjoy!

What is Sugar?

When we were all kids, we thought of sugar as something white, grainy and sweet. I never wondered where sugar came from. I knew it came from a plant called the sugar cane but that was all. I never gave thought about it until I my brother asked me what sugar is. I told him that it is made from a plant called the sugar cane and I tried to think of something else but I couldn't. That was it. It finally made me curious and I looked it up on the internet and I found out sugar canes are actually vegetables!

After I read about the sugar cane, I was very shocked. I would have never guessed that sugar came from a vegetable! But now that I think about it, it all makes sense. I mean, where else would sugar come from? Now that I learned a little more about sugar, I'm going to look at sugar a little differently. :)
